What is National Recovery Month?

Every September, National Recovery Month celebrates the millions of Americans in recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs). It’s a time to raise awareness about the recovery process, share success stories, and highlight the importance of treatment and support.

Recovery is Possible!

National Recovery Month is about celebrating those who have achieved recovery and sharing their stories. Recovery from SUDs is happening every day. Over 20 million Americans are living in recovery, showing that with the proper support, people can overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.

  • Success Rates: About 60% of people with SUDs achieve long-term recovery with proper support.
  • Different Paths: Recovery looks different for everyone. It can involve therapy, medication, support groups, or lifestyle changes.

The Power of Support

Support systems are crucial for recovery. Key elements include:

  1. Family and Friends: A strong network provides emotional support and accountability.
  2. Peer Support Groups: Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) offer community and understanding.
  3. Professional Treatment: Counseling, behavioral therapies, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) are essential for addressing the underlying causes of substance use.

How You Can Help

You can get involved in National Recovery Month by:

  1. Educating Yourself: Learn about SUDs and recovery, and share what you learn with others to reduce stigma.
  2. Supporting Programs: Donate to or volunteer with recovery organizations.
  3. Sharing Your Story: If you’re in recovery, sharing your story can inspire others.
  4. Attending Events: Participate in local Recovery Month events like walks or seminars to show your support.

Resources for Help

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use:

  • SAMHSA National Helpline: Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for free, confidential support and treatment options.
  • Support Groups: Organizations like AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery, and SMART Recovery offer peer support.
