Columbia, SC – LRADAC received a competitive federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to focus on enhancing and expanding treatment services for substance misuse for transitional youth in Lexington and Richland Counties.
This five-year 2.4 million dollar grant will enable LRADAC to build its capacity to serve transitional youth, young adults between the ages of 17-24, who are currently homeless or unstably housed. LRADAC will use the funds to partner with local homeless services providers, Transitions Homeless Recovery Center, MIRCI, and Palmetto Place, to provide treatment services within these agencies.
“We know that addressing a young person’s substance use offers them the hope of entering and maintaining their recovery, helping them reach their full potential in life,” said Jeremy Martin, LRADAC Vice President of Treatment and Intervention Services.
LRADAC was one of 27 to receive the grant, titled Enhancement and Expansion of Treatment and Recovery Services for Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and their Families.
The Department of Justice estimates that every year, over 1.7 million teens experience homelessness in the U.S. and substance use is highly prevalent among transitional youth. LRADAC is making it a priority to meet the needs of transitional youth in the Midlands and decrease barriers to receiving treatment services.
